Terms of Service
Last updated: 20 May 2026
These terms govern your use of bill-splitter.com (the "Service"). By using the Service you agree to them. If you don't, please don't use the Service. The terms are deliberately short because the Service is small: a free, anonymous, browser-based tool for splitting a restaurant bill from a single receipt photo.
1. Who can use the Service
The Service is intended for general adult use. You must be at least 13 years old (or the equivalent minimum age in your jurisdiction) to use it. There are no accounts and no signup, so we rely on you to decide whether the Service is appropriate for your situation. If you're using Bill-splitter on behalf of an organisation, you confirm you have the authority to bind that organisation to these terms.
2. Acceptable use
You agree NOT to:
- Upload content other than ordinary receipts or images of line-item printouts. The Service is a bill-splitting tool, not a general-purpose file host.
- Upload content that infringes copyright, contains illegal material, or violates anyone's privacy.
- Attempt to overload, attack, or otherwise disrupt the Service — including but not limited to denial-of-service attempts, scraping, excessive automated requests, or exploiting vulnerabilities.
- Reverse-engineer the Service in order to extract personal data about other participants. Session URLs are unguessable for a reason.
- Use the Service in any way that breaks applicable law in your jurisdiction.
We may rate-limit, block, or otherwise restrict access to anyone we reasonably believe is using the Service in a way that breaks these rules. Because we don't have accounts, restrictions are typically applied at the network level.
3. Your content
You retain all rights to the receipt content you upload. You grant us the limited right to process that content for the sole purpose of providing the Service — running OCR in your browser, transmitting the parsed receipt to your fellow participants, and deleting everything within 30 minutes. We do not claim any other rights to your data.
Because we don't retain receipt content beyond the live session, we don't and can't use it to train AI models, sell to third parties, or build profiles. See the privacy policy for the full data-handling story.
4. The Service is provided as-is
The Service is provided "as is" and "as available", without warranties of any kind, whether express or implied, including but not limited to warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, accuracy, and non-infringement. OCR is imperfect and may misread items, prices, or totals. Live updates may be delayed by network conditions outside our control. The Service may be unavailable due to maintenance, outages, or our own decisions about how to operate it.
You are responsible for verifying the per-person totals before anyone pays. We provide reconciliation maths within one cent of the printed total, but the final maths is yours to confirm.
5. Limitation of liability
To the maximum extent permitted by law, our total liability arising out of or relating to your use of the Service is limited to zero euros (or the equivalent in your local currency) — the amount you paid us for the Service. We are not liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, including but not limited to disputes between you and the people you split bills with, losses arising from OCR errors, or losses arising from the unavailability of the Service.
6. Third-party services
The Service uses third-party providers for specific functions:
- Google Analytics and Google AdSense for analytics and a single landing-page ad, both subject to your cookie-consent choice and Google's own terms and privacy policies.
- Stripe, if you choose to make an optional donation. Stripe processes the payment directly; we never see your card details.
We are not responsible for the practices or availability of these third parties. Their respective terms govern your interaction with them.
7. Intellectual property
The Service's source code is the property of its authors and contributors and is licensed to you only as needed to use the Service in a browser. The Bill-splitter name, logo, and visual design are the trademarks of the project's maintainers; please don't use them in a way that implies endorsement or affiliation without permission.
8. Changes to these terms
We may update these terms occasionally. Material changes are reflected in the "Last updated" date at the top of this page. Continued use of the Service after such updates constitutes acceptance of the revised terms. Because we have no accounts, we cannot notify users individually — checking this page is the only authoritative record.
9. Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of the European Union and the national law applicable at the maintainer's place of residence, without regard to conflict-of-law principles. Any dispute that cannot be resolved informally will be brought before the competent courts at that location, subject to mandatory consumer-protection rules that may apply in your jurisdiction.
